Gary Holmes Eldred was born April 23, 1938 in Yakima, WA to Holmes and Marian Eldred. The family moved to San Pedro, CA and later settled in Lomita where he graduated from Narbonne High School, class of 1956. He is survived by his wife Theresa, together for 64 loving years, his sister Sunny Rogers, 5 Children, 11 Grandchildren and 7 Great Grandchildren. Gary worked as a Retail Grocery Management and retired from Dryers Ice Cream in 1999 after 20 years.
He served the Lord and Church as a Lector, Eucharistic Minister, money collector and counter and the Knights of Columbus. His wife, Teri, would always say “He is a better Catholic then I am”. He was converted and then baptized into the
Catholic Church.
His love of baseball moved him to the world of Little League Youth Baseball, where he spent the next 50 plus years of his spare time, volunteering – Umpiring over 55 plus years, in addition to Coaching, serving several positions on the Local, District, State Boards including the Western Region Staff. He served as President for local leagues, Chief Umpire, ADA, Instructor for Clinics for coaches and umpires across the country. In addition to Little League he also conducted clinics on Umpiring, Coaching, Scorekeeping for Pony Baseball, High School and Semi-Pro baseball. He achieved life long dream of umpiring in all 8 Little League World Series. An Achievement that he alone has done.
His sense of humor was felt by all. Family, friends or even strangers. Always leaving you with a smile. So he will leave us with the following: “I Am The Umpire and I Promise I won’t Coach If You Won’t Umpire”. And always remember I’m the President of the Special High Intensity Training Program (S.H.I.T)
The Lord called our Dad, Our Friend and our Mentor safe at home on July 26th 2022 where he is now Calling Balls and Strikes for God.
