Obituary for Fabian Salas
On Saturday morning, September 5th, 2020, Jose Fabiano de Jesus Salas, husband and father of twelve children, passed away at the age of 91 in his sleep. Fabian was born in San Martin, Michoacán, Mexico to Daniel Salas and Carmen Ramirez. Growing up as the last surviving son of communal farmers, he never attended school but rather worked on the family’s farm from as far back as he could remember. He married Maria Leonor Uribe in 1947 in the local village parish of San Martin. In 1969 he emigrated to the United States and worked as a migrant farm worker and eventually an upholsterer. They had seven sons and five daughters.
Fabian enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his countless grandchildren. It was not unusual to have him wear you out, walking through swap meets, yard sales, or haggling with the local vendors. He never went very far without his sombrero or one of his many, many jackets. He could be bought with pan dulce, arros con leche, or camarones rancheros. He would enjoy entertaining guest with a carne asada or invite you to comer a nana-out (In-N-Out Burger). He was illiterate but loved to discuss politics and would never shy away from any home improvement or landscaping project. Fabian or “La Liebre” as his friends called him, loved to tell stories. He never let the truth get in the way of a good story. He was funny, charismatic, quick to show off and brag about his family and their successes. He never let life’s challenges get to him and always seemed to take each day as they came.
Fabian was preceded in death by his daughters Carmen and Reyna, his son Nicholas, daughters-in-law Rita and Reyna. He is survived by his wife of 73 years, nine children Juan, Melchor, Lydia, Jorge, Sally, Moses, David, Norma and Jaime and his many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on September 18th, 2020 at the Rubidoux Mortuary from 8:00am – 11:00am located at 6091 Mission Blvd Riverside, CA 92509.
