Dedrick Anthony "Speedy" Callahan zoomed through life much like he rode his beloved Harley – with gusto, a twinkle in his eye, and a laugh that could be heard a mile away. Born on June 29, 1961, in Riverside, CA, Speedy never lost his zeal for life until his last day on June 30, 2024, in the very same town that witnessed the first rev of his engine.
Speedy was a man who knew the art of living. He was the beloved husband of the late Dorathea Callahan, whose memory he cherished with every chuckle and jest. Speedy's legacy is carried on through his children – Dedrick Jr., Micah, Dahani, Jacob, Nathan, and his precious daughter, Latoya Aragon "Callahan". Each one of them inherited a bit of his humor, his generous spirit, and, thankfully, his sense of direction when it came to fishing spots.
As a lifelong fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Speedy often joked that he bled black and gold. His love for his team was only matched by his passion for Harley Davidson motorcycles, which he often said were his method of transportation to cloud nine. Speedy's infectious laughter could light up a room, and his jokes were the kind that would make you groan before you burst into laughter.
A man who found his greatest joy in the simple pleasures of life, Speedy was a magnet for friends. His philosophy was simple, "If you have a family that loves you, a few good friends, food on your table, and a roof over your head, you're richer than you think." And rich he was, with friends and family who adored him.
Speedy lived his life with the belief that a helping hand was the best gift you could give. He never hesitated to extend his to those in need, whether it was fixing a neighbor's car or offering sage, albeit comical, advice. Speedy's spirit was as loving as it was funny and spirited, and he believed that laughter was the shock absorber that eased the blows of life.
In tribute to Speedy's unique take on life, let's remember him with a quote from the great comedian George Burns: "Happiness is having a large, loving, caring, close-knit family in another city." While Speedy certainly cherished his close-knit family, he'd be the first to say that a little space can indeed be a happy place – especially when you're trying to sneak the last piece of pie.
Speedy's departure was sudden, but he left behind a trail of memories filled with joy, laughter, and the scent of fresh fish from a successful day by the lake. He would want us to celebrate his life with stories that make our sides split and our hearts light. As we bid farewell to a man who was a husband, father, friend, and the life of every party, let's honor his memory by living life as he did – full throttle, with love in our hearts and a joke on our lips.
Dedrick "Speedy" Callahan lived a life that many dream of but few dare to embrace. His was a journey filled with love, laughter, and the roar of a motorcycle echoing into the sunset. As we say goodbye to this extraordinary man, let's do so with a smile, for that's exactly how he would have wanted it.
