Apolonia was born in 1918 in La Mesa, New Mexico. She was raised by her grandmother Victoria Montes, because her mother died ten days after giving birth to her from the Spanish Influenza. She lived to be 101 years old before passing away on March 12, 2020.
She wed in 1933 and had three children. She supported herself and her children by picking cotton and also working as a part-time seamstress. In 1942 she became a single parent and began to work at the La Mesa Post Office until 1955.
In 1956 she moved to California and began working in a factory. She never got her driver’s license but that did not stop her. She traveled everywhere via public transportation. She was very independent and got her GED.
In 1958 she went to cosmetology school and got her cosmetology license. She worked at three beauty shops before becoming a manager at a beauty shop in Rosemead, California, and worked there until she retired.
She loved to have Sunday lunches with family and friends. She loved to drink soda and eat See’s Candy. She also loved sewing, music, gardening, and animals, but cats were her favorite. She was always feeding the stray cats in the neighborhood. She had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh.
Apolonia is survived by her children Beatrice Escajeda and Hector Valles, and her sister Corina Gomez of El Paso, Texas. She had eight grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, six great great grandchildren, and two great great great grandchildren.
